The upcoming May/June 2022 issue focuses on technology for the book. WD would like to know what it hopes to hold on to as technology changes our world.
Our official question: As technology continues to change the way we think about reading and writing, what do you wish would never change?
I’m a millennial, which means I’m glad to find bridges between two generations – one who grew up without the internet and one who grew up after. I remember the first time we got a computer (believe me, it was a big deal), and the sound of the dial still haunts my dreams.
What I hope never changes in our ever-changing world is that we keep our libraries alive.
I’ve always been a big fan of our local library. The library originated in a small town, and turned into a Christian church. I remember the light from the stained-glass windows making splashes of color across the wood floors, the musty smell that floor carried when it rained, and even the Thomas the Tank Engine rug in the kids’ area. The library was a place to go for daily activities in the summer, an after-school hangout for my pre-teen friends and me (before we had cars and part-time jobs), and when this building sold out so the library could move into a smaller, newer location, I cried actually.
I renewed my love for the local library in 2020. While I had a library card, I wasn’t used to it. Our library app allowed me to borrow books almost during the shutdown, and then before the library fully opened, card holders were allowed to review books from an online system and do an offline pickup.
When it was safe for us to return to public places, I spent hours browsing shelves, looking through magazines, and ordering a comfortable chair to sit and write. Not only has the library given me a mental sanctuary – what’s better than a good book? – But it also gave me a physical escape. It made me remember all those wonderful days in the library as a kid and that I could have the same kind of experience as an adult.
