Lake Superior Magazine is a bimonthly magazine focused on the Lake Superior region. Founded in 1979, the magazine serves to be the authority on the living, environment, and recreation of Lake Superior, and expects submissions to reflect this goal.
The editors say, “As a region-focused publication with a national distribution, we are very selective, only considering the quality of the material. However, every year we accept a number of offers from new writers and photographers.”
This market generally pays $200-$400 for features (1600-2000 words) and $75-$200 for sections and columns (800-1200 words).
what they are looking for
Editors are most excited about pieces that have great photography, especially for the By the Shores and View • Point pieces. For direct, factual works, they are interested in the people, places, and events of the Lake Superior area (both contemporary and historical). Short clips of their departments, which include Homes, Health and Wellness, Lake Superior Journal, Wild Superior, Heritage, Destinations, and Profile, are also welcome.

The editors say, “The strongest advice we can give is to read the journal to understand our approach before you submit it.”
how to apply
Prospective writers can view the editors via email (email@example.com).
The editors say, “We reserve the right to accept or decline a particular query based on quality, relevance, and editorial subjectivity. We prefer inquiries that outline a proposed narrative treatment of a topic and name potential sources.”
