Miss Excel Has Some Advice For Those Who Want To Be A Social Media Influencer

There is something about a success story that inspires us all.

We imagine “what if” scenarios that include more respect and appreciation. Imagine what it would be like not to worry about jobs or making a living. It is a dream that we begin to imagine a world in which we can control our lives and not just succumb to corporate orders.

Kat Norton, aka Miss Excel, was successful because she tried something different outside of her comfort zone. Hint: It involved dancing and making videos. If you’re looking to be a social media influencer in 2022, this could be a wake-up call.

She recently told me, “When I first saw I was dancing on TikTok with an Excel screen over my head, everything inside of me wanted to resist this crazy idea.” Norton, who explains the intricacies of Microsoft Excel to nearly a million subscribers on her YouTube channel, now has more than 500,000 followers. My favorite clips include an alternate character called “Boss” who often doesn’t understand hacks.

“I didn’t know how to edit videos and I didn’t have any fancy equipment,” she explained. “I also didn’t have the TikTok app on my phone at the time. My mind was screaming ‘You’re 27 at a job at a company, you can’t dance to TikTok’ but my hunch was like ‘Make TikTok!'”

She posted her first video in June 2020, and she never looked back. “If I had walked out that day, my entire business wouldn’t exist.”

This business is now very profitable. One report states that she earns between $250,000 and $300,000. I once made $100,000 in less than 24 hours.

Her advice to anyone debating whether to become an influencer is to take what she calls a “messy action” (for example, take the step without waiting). “It is important to realize that it will always be easier to stay in your comfort zone and stop acting out now. Your subconscious mind will try to persuade you to stay. It takes a conscious and consistent effort to compete with those subconscious patterns and come out of stagnation.”

“The more messy action you take, the easier it will be to push yourself forward,” she added. “Taking a messy action was the catalyst for scaling up my business in a few months.”

One of the “messy” steps I took was also to start Instagram. Many thousands have watched her videos on TikTok and she has quite a few sponsors. This prevented me from reaching my full creative potential. I didn’t realize how creative I was because I didn’t give myself the space to be.”

The next step after I came up with the idea was to build a fan base.

“I focused all my energy on creating free content that helps people,” she says. “In turn, it grew a massive audience and built trust with my community. My community was already enjoying the course and learning with me. So, by the time I set up the course, my community was eager to get started! I set out to make an impact before wealth, and business naturally followed” .

In the end, this is not an easy path. Being an influencer has a bad reputation, and it’s hard to build a following at first. Often this involves being famous and then talking about products.
